Two Augusta-area teenagers walking on a rural road died Wednesday night after being struck by a Jeep.

Sarah Riffe, 13, and Michael Perry, 17, were walking with two other teens around 8 p.m. in Hephzibah when they were hit, The Augusta Chronicle reported. Both teens died at the scene. The other two teens were not seriously injured.

Investigators have not yet determined how fast 20-year-old William Shore was driving out of a curve in the 4800 block of McCombs Road when he struck the teens, according to the report. The road does not have street lights and the teens did not have flashlights.

Charges have not been filed against Shore but are possible. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the wreck.

"He's got to live with this for a long time," Steven Riffe, Sarah's father, told the newspaper as he stood on the side of McCombs Road. "I wouldn't want to be in his shoes either. No one sets out to run someone's kids down."

Steven Riffe said the teenagers were walking to a friend's house after an evening church service. He said Sarah and Michael were longtime friends who previously were girlfriend and boyfriend.
