The Cherokee County School District’s recently released 2015-16 Inventory of School Housing shows that, for a third consecutive year, none of the district’s schools is considered “critically overcrowded.”

The school board identifies a critically overcrowded school as one exceeding 140 percent of its enrollment capacity, is using all available portable classrooms and meets other criteria. District officials said that if portable classrooms weren’t available, 14 schools would be operating at 100 percent or more of capacity. That’s an increase of 13 from last year. Eight are operating at more than 120 percent of capacity.

Officials say relief came to Little River Elementary School this fall as a preschool center on its campus relocated. A construction project now underway should provide more elbow room at Dean Rusk Middle School and Sequoyah High School as well.
