Powder Springs officials are planning to break ground on its downtown park at 10 a.m. April 6 on the Town Square off Marietta Street and Pineview Drive.
A $3,668,500 contract was awarded to low bidder JHC Corp. of Peachtree City on Feb. 4 for the park’s construction.
Previously, the City Council hired Tunnell Spangler Walsh & Associates of Atlanta - doing business as TSW - to complete design and engineering services for the downtown public park.
In April 2018 for $95,471, the city demolished a commercial building at 4485 North Town Square - across from the Municipal Court building and the city’s Community Development building - to make way for the downtown park after spending about $1 million for its acquisition.
The new park will feature a bicycle trail head with connectivity to the Silver Comet Trail and the city’s Lucille and Wild Horse trails, signage, an interactive water feature, a performance space, outdoor ping pong tables, outdoor cafe tables and chairs, an earthen sitting berm and night lighting.
Those attending the groundbreaking are asked to bring their bikes.
For children, there will be a bicycle obstacle course.
Also, individuals and families can ride the Silver Comet Trail and check out the Linear Park on Richard D. Sailors Parkway with its playgrounds, covered basketball arena, pavilion and covered exercise pavilion.
