Powder Springs Mayor Patricia Vaughn agreed during Monday night’s city council meeting to assist Hillgrove High School senior Catherine Jones with her petition drive against federal dietary guidelines.
So far for her senior project, Jones said she has collected around 700 signatures on paper and 125 online - from as far away as California, calling for all federal government officials also to follow these public school dietary restrictions by putting the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act “where your mouth is and set an example for us all or change this law.”
For example, Jones said students in her school in Powder Springs are limited to one package of ketchup or barbecue sauce with their chicken nuggets and only diet drinks in the vending machines, containing harmful artificial sweeteners.
Jones also is calling on freedom for school clubs and organizations to be able to sell food products of their choosing for fundraisers.
Vaughn said she would forward her petitions to the staffs of U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga.; U.S. Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga. and U.S. Rep. David Scott, D-Ga.
