Missing North Carolina girl Arieyana Simone Forney, 11, has been located and is safe with authorities, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.
An Amber Alert was issued earlier when she was reported missing after her grandparents, who were her guardians, were found dead at their home in east Charlotte. The Amber Alert has been canceled.
Arieyana was found in Washington, D.C., authorities said.
Police are investigating the double homicide.
Police say firefighters went to the home about 11:05 a.m. Sunday after an alarm system detected smoke. Inside, they found a small fire and the homeowners, Curtis Atkinson Sr. and Ruby Atkinson, a husband and wife, dead.
Police are seeking murder charges against Curtis Atkinson Jr., the son of the two killed. The younger Atkinson is the uncle of Arieyana.
“It is alarming," said Maj. Mike Smathers, of the CMPD. “This is a quiet neighborhood. This is a beautiful Sunday afternoon and we’re out here for this. It’s unsettling for us as well."
These are Charlotte's 24th and 25th homicides of the year.
Investigators say a white 2005 Chevy Impala with North Carolina license plate number PAV 4294 was seen leaving the scene.
“That car does belong at this home and is regularly seen at this home. (The car) was seen leaving the home just prior to the fire department's arrival,” Smathers said.
