The AJC is seeking a temporary contractor to work for three to four months as a Digital Audience Specialist with the Food & Dining team. The audience specialist will work up to 40 hours a week with the food editor and a team of freelancers to create and promote useful, relevant information with the goal of attracting and engaging website visitors. The Digital Audience Specialist will help plan coverage, producing key elements and features that will build the widest audience for coverage in their topic area. Specialists adapt to changing reader needs and rely on metrics and user data to inform decisions about content to create and promote.

Digital Audience Specialists must be proactive and display a strong sense of urgency, energy and creativity. The audience specialist has a deep understanding of our business and audience goals and a deep commitment to audience and platform knowledge.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

• Monitor real-time site metrics, data and internal reports on content team posts to drive decision-making in order to capitalize on audience behavior, growth and retention.

• Build pages, create story packages/presentations (including, but not limited to photo galleries, maps, polls and quizzes).

• Story optimization -- Rewrite headlines to make them more compelling for digital audience; add strong visuals, video, multimedia, contextual links and related content, tagging content for various purposes. Optimize content for search engine discovery.

• Monitor other sites for relevant dining news and write short news reports. Also coordinate with other AJC dining news reporters to assign stories as necessary.

• Assist in managing Dining social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook and Twitter accounts.

• Work with AJC Food/Dining writers to improve digital content and ensuring the best execution for readers.

• Periodically attend Engagement meetings or participate in daily morning planning conference calls.

• Periodically attend media events on behalf of the AJC’s Food/Dining team.

Key requirements:

• Have studied journalism, communication or related discipline

• Knowledge of AP style

• Ability to work in a high-energy, fast-paced environment

• Self-starter who can initiate and execute new ideas
