Decatur’s new superintendent David Dude on Monday signed a three-year contract paying him $179,000 for the remainder of this year, another $179,000 for 2016-17 and $189,000 in 2017-18. He’s also eligible for annual performance bonuses of $10,000 this year and next, and $20,000 in 2017-18.

The contract also allows for an extension and raise of $199,000 (before bonus) in 2018-19.

The Chief Operating Officer for the Iowa City Community School District, Dude is scheduled to start in Decatur on Nov. 2. After a nearly five-month search by the city’s school board, Dude is only the 10th Decatur superintendent since 1902. The previous nine superintendents have had an average tenure of 12.44 years.

Though it hasn’t been made public yet, current Superintendent Phyllis Edwards’ last day will probably be Nov. 13. That will be 12 years and three months after she started. Edwards, who announced her resignation in March, makes $220,000 annually plus her $20,000 annual performance bonus.
