The Cherokee County School Board has approved a partnership with Mountain Education Charter High School to take over the district’s summer school credit recovery program next summer, and the Polaris evening program next fall.
“Mountain Ed leaders have promised as seamless a transition as possible for both current students and staff, with plans to continue employment for its teachers, the majority of whom also work during the day in (Cherokee County School District) schools,” according to a district announcement.
Mountain Education Center Inc. will expand services to students in the alternative high school program, providing one-on-one academic coaching and mentoring and a complimentary evening meal catered by local restaurants, officials said.
The program, a school board agenda report said, is for students “who have dropped out, gotten behind in school, have to work or care for children during the day and/or want to get ahead in their high school credits.” The goal is to ensure every Cherokee County student earns his or her high school diploma.
