The Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted 3-2 Thursday to approve one new member and two reappointments to the South Cobb Redevelopment Authority and table 4-1 another new member.

Kwaku George replaces Robin Meyer, while Darhyl Watkins and Six Flags Over Georgia president Dale Kaetzel were reappointed with all serving until Dec. 31, 2019.

Commissioners Lisa Cupid and Bob Ott were opposed to these three.

Cupid said the current SCRA members have been “insensitive to the needs of the Six Flags Road area,” especially regarding Magnolia Crossing apartment residents who have to move out by Jan. 1.

However in November, Cupid wrote in her weekly district email that she supported the $3.7 million purchase of these apartments by the SCRA and their demolition and that the commissioners could not help the residents since the SCRA is in charge of that project.

“Overall, the purchase of Magnolia Crossing is a strong step in the revitalization of the Six Flags corridor as was dreamed, desired and planned with residents as far back as 2004. It will result in removing a property that has one-third of crime associated in the Six Flags area and significant code enforcement and structural concerns,” Cupid said that email.

Cupid was the only one to vote against tabling to January her SCRA nominee of Herschel Tolson, a day care owner in the Six Flags area who she says knows many of the residents, to replace Ford Thigpen.

While Cupid claimed she was supposed to nominate one of these replacements, the state law about the SCRA on the county’s website says the seven-member authority receives four appointments by the Cobb Board of Commissioners and three appointments by the Cobb County legislative delegation.
