Having heard opinions from both sides and giving itself more time to consider the issue, the Milton City Council voted Monday to extend through Oct. 2 a moratorium on community sewerage disposal systems.

The decision bars the acceptance of applications for permits authorizing community systems. It extends an emergency moratorium adopted in April over concerns about “holdover” Fulton County regulations, predating Milton’s incorporation, that allow the systems.

The resolution adopted by the Council on Monday notes Milton has never adopted its own rules “tailored to the city,” cites the concerns raised by some but adds the city is mindful that community sewerage systems “have been used successfully in Milton, in Georgia, and throughout the United States for many years.”

The resolution passed 5-1, with Council Member Burt Hewitt opposed. Council Member Joe Longoria was absent.
