The Milton City Council has dissolved its Cultural Arts Committee in favor of having a nonprofit organization assume its mission of promoting the arts.
The Arts Committee was formed in October 2016 to showcase local artists and increase tourism, among other goals, Sarah LaDart, economic development manager, said in a report to the council. It successfully produced the Milton’s Got Talent competition.
After the council in January turned down the committee’s request for funding to seek not-for-profit status, its seven members independently funded the creation of the Milton Arts Council, a 501(c)3 nonprofit with a nonvoting seat on its board for a city staff representative, LaDart said. The aim was to vastly increase their access to grants and funding.
“From the beginning, it was staff’s vision that our purpose would be to bring together a group of local art enthusiasts and present them with their mission and our vision,” LaDart said “To us, their commitment to Milton arts in the formation of this 501(c)3 is a complete success.”
