Milton, aiming to install a culvert and reopen a road ahead of the start of the new school year, announced the road will be closed a week longer than originally anticipated. But that’s OK – Fulton County schools will start a week later this year than in prior years.
Birmingham Road is now scheduled to reopen Thursday, Aug. 8, rather than Aug. 1 as previously planned. The first day of the 2019-20 school year in Fulton is Monday, Aug. 12; last year, the first day of school was Aug. 6.
“Transportation projects are always dependent upon the weather,” Milton said. “We are confident that the roadway will be reopened in time for the first day of school.”
Since May 28, Birmingham has been closed to all but local traffic between Freemanville and Henderson roads while CMES Inc. crews fast-tracked the removal of a bridge and installation of a box culvert, a $617,805 undertaking.
