The State Board of Pardons and Paroles is expanding a pilot project to give parolees community service as a sanction instead of revoking their parole and returning them to prison.

The program began in Milledgeville, Gainesville, Columbus and Dalton. It is expanding to communities across Georgia for parolees who commit low level violations of supervision requirements.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) oversees the parolees, who will pick up trash, mow and trim along roads. ANDRIA SIMMONS

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention opened a new 12-story office building at its Clifton Road campus in June – marking the end of a decade-long building program.

Located near Emory University, the 311,000-square-foot facility will house offices for more than 1,300 employees, according to builder Turner Construction Co. The building is on track to earn a LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its sustainable design, the company said. MISTY WILLIAMS
