On Sunday, in honor of a 125-year-old South-View Cemetery, where many of Atlanta’s most prominent African Americans are buried, dozens of families will gather to celebrate its historical legacy, as well as mark the dedication of a new mausoleum.
Martin Luther King Jr., was originally buried there, until his body was moved to the King Center. But the cemetery is also the resting place of his parents Martin Luther King Sr. and Alberta King; Bishop Henry McNeal Turner; businessman Alonzo Herndon; John Wesley Dobbs; as well as former Tuskegee Airmen and Atlanta Black Crackers from the Negro Leagues.
The cemetery, located on Jonesboro Road, was chartered on April 21, 1886 by six former slaves who believed that blacks in Atlanta deserved a decent, respectful resting place. ERNIE SUGGS

Taste of Shiloh food fest is Saturday
Looking for family fun this weekend?
The Shiloh Community Foundation will host the Taste of Shiloh food neighborhood festival Saturday.
The fun begins at 7:30 a.m. with a 5 K road race beginning in front of Shiloh High School in Snellville. Registration for the race will be held at 7 a.m.
The event continues with a community art fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and food tasting from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. The festivities also include a silent auction, a children’s play area, an antique car show and entertainment.

Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, Trout Unlimited and the National Park Service are organizing the first-ever Sweep the Hooch from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The event is a multi-site cleanup within the 48 miles of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.
Volunteers will fill three different roles: Walkers will pick up trash and perform trail maintenance; waders will collect trash from the shallow water areas; and paddlers use kayaks and canoes to collect debris in the stream.
