Unless major changes are made, the Fulton County government could have a $107.3 million deficit next year, Finance Director Patrick O'Connor told commissioners at their planning retreat Wednesday. "We're feeling the full impact now of the decline in the tax digest," O'Connor said.
Among the options he and County Manager Zachary Williams presented: a 1.1 "revenue neutral" millage rate increase to generate $40 million, a hiring freeze to add $15 million, increasing employee's health care shares and reducing the match to new employees' retirement funds.

The University System of Georgia raised more than $1 million for student scholarships this year, system officials announced Monday.
More than 70 students are receiving scholarship money from the university system's foundation, officials said.
The State Board of Regents planned to increase scholarship fund-raising this year in part because of anticipated changes to the popular lottery-funded, merit-based HOPE scholarship. The regents asked individual campuses to step up fund-raising as well.
