Staff at a College Park school started a GoFundMe page to raise money to take students to see "Hidden Figures," an idea that other educators across the nation have similarly used.
The Golden Globe Awards-nominated movie is based on Margot Lee Shetterly's book, "Hidden Figures: The Story of the African-American Women Who Helped Win the Space Race."
Heritage Elementary School teacher Baiyina Jihad created a page to raise money for movie tickets, transportation and food for students in the Girl Power program.

The 3rd through 5th grade students, who are from low income homes, will earn the tickets by completing research assignments related to movie subject.
"The opportunity to attend the viewing of the movie, Hidden Figures, will allow the mentees to learn the story of three incredible African American women," the fundraiser description read. "Like these girls, the women were able to persevere through challenges unique to African American women."
Over two weeks, and 21 donations, the $500 goal was reached.
Similar pages have been created by educators in other cities, including Detroit, Baltimore, and Minneapolis.
