A Memorial Day display in Hiram is back up after residents complained at a Hiram City Council meeting, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The display was taken down after someone told City Manager Barry Atkinson it had religious overtones, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

The memorial spread along Highway 92 and was meant to honor the 79 Paulding County residents who died in American wars.

“It opened our eyes that we missed something here,” Atkinson told the television station Tuesday. “We immediately took corrective action.”

That decision was reversed when city council members sided with residents and decided to reassemble the display.

“Even though these are crosses they don’t represent any religious symbols to us it is just an actual memorial for the veterans,” Pamela Cohen told Channel 2 Action News, “and we wanted to come out and help out community because we are 100 percent behind them in this.”

A special service is planned to honor the fallen residents this weekend, Channel 2 reported.
