The Atlanta VA Medical Center plans to beef up its mental health operations.

Plans call for hiring 20 mental health clinicians and three support staffers.  Currently, there are 311 mental health clinicians and support workers helping Atlanta-area veterans.

Nationally, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs plans to add about 1,600 clinicians and nearly 300 support staff.  Mental health operations help veterans through individualized care and includes readjustment counseling and immediate crisis services.

In 2011, the VA provided mental health services to 1.3 million veterans nationwide. www.vacareers.va.gov/.
