Decatur Mayor Patti Garrett said it sounded like somebody stomping around on the second floor of her house. Several miles away Avondale Estates Mayor Jonathan Elmore said the thudding interrupted his watching Sunday Night Football.

They weren’t alone. Between roughly 10-11 p.m. Sunday possibly thousands in the two cities heard the incessant bass reverberating from the closing acts at Music Midtown in Piedmont Park.

Decatur police fielded 92 complaint calls, but Spokesperson Lt. Jennifer Ross figured hundreds more were unsuccessful getting through.

The sound was not so much loud as it was pervasive and annoying, and seemingly coming from all directions at once. It kept list serves popping throughout both cities for hours.

“The way it was explained to me,” Decatur City Manager Peggy Merriss said during Monday’s city commission meeting, “is that an unusual low cloud coverage created a widespread echo effect.”
