Noted historians and civil rights activists will attend a panel discussion on the links between the Civil War and the struggle for  civil rights for blacks.

Kennesaw State University's Center for the Study of the Civil War Era will host the Eighth Annual Symposium on New Interpretations  of the American Civil War on Friday and Saturday.

Participants include Thomas Costa, chairman and professor of history at the University of Virginia-Wise ; Emory M. Thomas, author and history scholar; and Judy Richardson, a filmmaker and activist.

The opening reception will be will be at 6 p.m. Friday at  Zion Baptist Church, 165 Lemon St. in Marietta.  It will be followed by a concert at the old church building, which is now a heritage museum.

Symposium Session I, 8:30 .am. to noon Saturday at the Burrus Building, Rm. 151 on the KSU campus, 1000 Chastain Rd.

Symposium Session II, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, 900 Kennesaw Mountain Dr.
