As the tax season gets into full swing, no one is immune from scammers trying to make a buck off the unsuspecting — not even law enforcement agencies.

The Kennesaw Police Department said its phone number has been spoofed and released a statement Monday that said, "Concerned citizens have reported receiving phone calls from our 770-422-2505 number from an unknown subject claiming to be with the 'Treasury Department' who claims the citizens owe them money. These calls are not coming from the Police Department or the City of Kennesaw. The caller has 'spoofed' our phone number which allows him to use our number as his caller ID."

“Spoofing” is when a caller deliberately and deceptively disguises their identity when making outgoing calls. The information displayed on the recipient’s Caller ID is fictitious. Spoofing is often used as part of an attempt to trick someone into giving away valuable personal information so it can be used in fraudulent activity or sold illegally.

Kennesaw police are asking anyone who receives any suspicious phone calls to report them.
