The Dawson County sheriff said Thursday that a rape report in Dawsonville apparently was false.

“After further investigation, it appears that the reported rape was fabricated,” Sheriff Jeff Johnson said in a Facebook post. “The investigation continues and more details will be released at a later time.”

Earlier, Johnson said a rape was reported in a wooded area.

“Regardless of the validity of this report,” the sheriff’s post read Thursday, “we continue to encourage our community to remain vigilant and cognizant of their surroundings.”
