The Johns Creek City Council has approved a five-year, $1.5 million contract to outfit its police officers with body-worn cameras.

The contract with Axon Enterprises Inc. also includes “fleet” or vehicle cameras, interview room cameras and upgraded Taser devices, according to a report to the council by Police Chief Ed Densmore.

The police currently have a mix of equipment from Axon and L3 Industries. With the Axon contract, Densmore said, “we will have the ability to integrate all three recording systems, which will allow us to store all video, audio and Taser records into a consolidated and secure database.”

Body-worn cameras, integrated with vehicle recording systems, “will document incidents using video and audio and will no longer be limited by proximity to the police vehicle,” Densmore said. And with updated Taser 7 devices, “the body-worn camera system can be configured to automatically activate and begin recording via numerous preconfigured triggers.”
