Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker warned that the community is at a critical economic crossroads in his State of the City address late last week.

Bodker told community leaders and residents that Johns Creek lacks a sustainable tax base, with homeowners contributing 81 percent to the local tax digest, compared with only 19 percent from commercial taxpayers. He said without a fix over time, service levels will have to be reduced or taxes raised.

The mayor has proposed creation of a 728-acre central business district. He said the city has commissioned a team to develop a master plan for the area and urged residents and business leaders to join the planning process.

Bodker told community leaders and residents that creation of a true downtown will also help with other challenges facing the city, including attracting and keeping young professionals.
