An ongoing initiative to combat gang activity in Henry County will receive $198,933 in federal funds to continue its efforts.
The Board of Commissioners voted Sept. 17 to accept the grant from the Northern District of Georgia U.S. Attorney’s Office through the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council and it does not require any matching funds. Sheriff Keith McBrayer asked the board for the support regarding his office’s Gang Suppression Unit, which he created two years ago after identified increasing gang violence in the county jail and elsewhere in the community.
McBrayer reported that there are an estimated 77,000 gang members in Georgia and more than 100 in the Henry County Jail at any given time.
