A proposed ordinance that would raise the hotel-motel tax from 5 to 8 percent in unincorporated Henry County was discussed at a recent regular meeting of the Board of Commissioners.
Local legislation that would allow such a move was approved by the Georgia General Assembly in 2010 but the board never acted on it. Three of the county’s four cities already use the 8-percent rate. The county currently gets about $30,000 per month from its portion of the hotel-motel tax, the proceeds of which are shared with the Henry County Chamber of Commerce/Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Increasing the tax, which would affect 10 hotels in the county, could lead to another $15,000 per month that the county could use for interchange beautification, signage on local roads and other tourism-related development projects. The board gave no indication of when it might bring the ordinance up for a vote.
