Gwinnett, the state’s largest school district, won’t be furloughing employees or increasing class sizes under a 2014 budget unanimously approved Thursday night by the school board.
Total spending for the district was set at $1.76 billion, with about $1.3 billion earmarked for day-to-day operations. The district has designated $6.2 million to hire 85 new teachers, based on a projected increase in enrollment of 1,690 students.
The tax rates for the district will be set in June. The board tentatively set the millage rate at 19.80 mills for maintenance and operations and 2.05 mills for debt service – for a combined total millage rate of 21.85 mills. The current rate is 19.25 for M&O and 1.30 for debt service for a total of 20.55.
