Gwinnett County police said they wrote four tickets on the first day of special enforcement of laws barring motorists from driving around school buses stopped to pick up or drop off children.

Motorcycle officers are following school buses on their normal routes during the first few weeks of school, watching out for drivers who ignore the extended stop arms of buses.

The unlawful passing of a school bus gets a driver six points against his or her driver’s license, “the same amount as aggressive driving and speeding by 34 mph or more,” police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said.

An individual’s driver’s license is suspended if the motorist racks up 15 or more points in a 24-month period.
