A Lawrenceville Chili’s failed its latest health inspection after a “black mold-like substance” was found in the ice machine, a report says.

The restaurant on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road earned a 59/U on the inspection, down from its previous score of 90/A on an April 19 inspection.

Raw meat was stored over full beer kegs, risking cross contamination, the inspection report says. The “mold-like substance” was found inside the ice machine for a fourth consecutive inspection, according to the report.

Employees did not wear proper “beard restraints” while working with food, and multiple workers stored drinks in food preparation areas, which is not permitted, the report says. Food including chicken, shrimp, cheese and sour cream were held at too-warm temperatures, and other foods did not cool to a proper temperature quickly enough, the report says.

“We were disappointed with the grade we received from our recent health inspection on August 7. However, we took quick, corrective action and partnered with the health department to thoroughly address all concerns,” a Chili’s spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “We took this incident seriously because the health and safety of our Guests and Team Members is a top priority. We maintain strict standards of quality, safety and cleanliness in our restaurants and we have a robust food safety program in place to ensure we meet both our strict standards and regulatory requirements.”

Re-inspections are typically conducted within 10 days of a failure.
