The euthanasia rate at the Forsyth County animal shelter has dropped drastically and adoptions have shown a steady increase, according to officials.

The public shelter opened in August at 4065 County Way and replaced a privately-run entity under contract with the county. The new facility got off to a slow start on adoptions, but Deputy County Manager Tim Merritt said that since setting up a closer relationship with rescue groups, the numbers have upticked.

In December, 53 animals were adopted by citizens and 50 more were picked up by rescue groups to be adopted out.

The euthanasia rate which averaged nearly 40 percent from July through September dropped to 11 percent in December, Merritt said. He also pointed out that as a public facility, the shelter has to take whatever animals are brought in, some of whom are in very poor health.
