Forsyth County put out the word this week that county-provided water may show some discoloration due to increased mineral content, but it’s safe to drink.

The Water & Sewer Department attributed the discoloration to small amounts of naturally occurring iron and manganese, and two large water main breaks in the past week at the north and south ends of the county, which can stir up minerals in the lines.

County officials, responding to reports of discolored water, said they have run tests and found it safe for all uses including drinking, bathing and cooking, and there’s no need for a boil water order.

“The discoloration in the water is being caused by natural minerals,” Director of Water & Sewer Tim Perkins said Monday. “While it appears to already be clearing up in a majority of the water system, customers may continue to see some discoloration for several days.”

Forsyth officials said they will continue to monitor the situation, and in the unlikely event the water supply doesn't meet all quality standards, they will notify customers through emergency notification calls and the county website, www.forsythco.com
