A Forsyth County Sheriff’s deputy is being credited with saving the life of a teenage overdose victim.

Officials said Deputy Rodney Pirkle responded to a call for help early Monday and found a 17-year-old who appeared to be overdosing on heroin. Pirkle assessed the situation and administered a dose of naloxone, a drug designed to combat the effects of opioid overdoses. The teen regained consciousness and was being treated at a hospital.

Sheriff Duane Piper started the program last year, under which deputies are issued supplies of the drug to use in the field after undergoing extensive training on when and how to administer it.
