An early morning fire Wednesday heavily damaged the Palmetto public works building in south Fulton County, Channel 2 Action News reports.
A newspaper deliverer making a stop at a nearby restaurant about 4 a.m. saw flames coming from the building on Main Street and reported the fire. The blaze caused major damage to three bucket trucks and other vehicles.
“It’s a total loss for the building, and we’ve lost several hundred thousand [dollars] or more of our supplies,” said Butch Gaddy, director of Palmetto public works.
The equipment is used to service the city’s electrical, water and sewer systems, Gaddy said. Electrical work will have to be contracted out until insurance replaces the damaged equipment, he said.
The city’s road repair trucks escaped damage.
Fire investigators were at the scene seeking to determine the cause of the blaze.
