New software for Fayette County school buses will improve navigation and make other transportation processes more efficient, according to school system administrators.

On May 18 the Board of Education voted 4-1 to approve $63,000 for new GPS units that will pinpoint the location of all 176 buses in real time, give drivers more precise directions, compile data regarding routes and timesheets, and offer other functions that will reduce staff time and save fuel.

Deputy Superintendent Sam Sweat said the system “is well worth the money for what we’re going to be getting.”

Barry Marchman voted against the measure.
