The city of Stockbridge and the government of Fayette County are the latest municipal bodies to close their facilities to the public because of coronavirus.

Stockbridge announced on Sunday plans to close its offices this week as a precaution against the pandemic while the Fayette County Commission on Monday voted to ban public access between March 16 and March 27.

"Our main concern is the safety of both our community members and our team members as we continue to monitor the activity of the coronavirus," Stockbridge City Manager Randy Knighton said in a release.

"This is unprecedented territory as we confront an relatively unknown health threat that has impacted our entire nation over the past few weeks,” he said.

Fayette County said the ban was to help limit social interaction as the nation grapples with the impact of COVID-19. Fayette County staff will continue to work and conduct the area’s business as usual.

“We ask our residents to contact us via phone, email, or our website to keep any exposure to a minimum,” Fayette County said. “Contact information for staff is available on the website, https://fayettecountyga.gov/ when you navigate to the desired department on the left of the website.”

Schools in Clayton, Fayette and Henry agreed last Friday to close educational facilities beginning this week. Organizations such as the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton also banned the public at recent events in an attempt to mitigate the virus in metro Atlanta.
