The Fayette County Board of Commissioners put the brakes on a proposal to help fund relocation of the local Department of Driver Services office. The state plans to move the crowded, outdated office from its longtime site on McElroy Road in Fayetteville to a new service center at 749 West Lanier Avenue.

In FY2014 the county had designated $50,930 from the capital improvement project budget to pay for a parking lot expansion at the existing office, but that project was put on hold. The state recently asked the county to instead give $50,000 toward the office relocation.

The commissioners voted 5-0 on July 14 to deny the request, citing conflicts over the distribution of ad valorem car tax funds.
