The Fayette County Board of Commissioners voted 4-1 in a special session Thursday to reduce the main property tax millage rate to 4.917 mills, down from 5.171 in 2015. The millage for fire, EMS and E911 services will remain the same as last year.

An increase of nearly 6 percent in average county home assessments and a decrease in tax exemptions were cited as justification for the rollback. However, the reduced rate will result in less tax revenue for county projects. Commissioner Charles Rousseau cast the dissenting vote, saying he believes more residents want better roads, senior services and other improvements “we’re behind on” rather than a minor tax break.
