Q: I mentor a small group of young women and am looking for an event that we could attend close to home that is affordable. Can you assist me?

A: Cobb County Parks and Recreation and CKC Inc. have partnered to host an event called “Ladies First,” according to cobbcounty.org.

The invitation on the site reads, “Empowering and defining the elegance of every young woman.”

Deloris Powell, founder of CKC Inc., said that it was through her mentoring and conversations with young ladies that this event came about. She saw how they tended to group off based on ethnicity or peer groups.

“Together the girls learned they had more in common than they perceived – seeing beyond color or dress attire with no titles or judgments.”

The program will be held Saturday, March 16, at the Ron Anderson Recreation Center from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. in Powder Springs.

The lineup includes sessions in dressing for success, healthy eating, dining etiquette, communicating and business development just to name a few.

For the girls 11-13, one of their sessions will be about bullying prevention in social media.

This event is for young ladies of all ethnicities, ages, shapes and sizes, and socio-economic backgrounds - showcasing positivity and cohesiveness.

The young women will get a “sneak peek” inside the boutique prior to the fashion show and have the opportunity to shop afterwards for free – picking out an outfit or two.

There will be food (lunch) that can be purchased in addition to the snacks/goodies (food samples) that will be provided, along with a couple of breaks throughout the day.

“It is my hope that we can unify together as the power we are, as young ladies … shining bright like a diamond,” Powell said in a interview with the AJC.

The program will end with a fashion show building self-esteem, confidence and the will to succeed, according to CKC’s website.

The event is free for ages 17 and under. Ages 18 and up is $10.

Ladies First will be held at Ron Anderson Recreation Center, 3820 Macedonia Road in Powder Springs.
