The Cobb County Board of Commissioners has joined the Cobb County Board of Education in supporting the proposed Edna’s Law, House Bill 672. On Feb. 27, the commissioners agreed 5-0 to support what may become state law to allow law enforcement officers to use speed detection devices “within posted school zones” for public schools.

However, the bill did not make it to “Crossover Day” and has a 46 percent chance of passing this year, according to AJC Politifact.

Sponsored by State Rep. Erica Thomas, D-Austell, the bill is named in memory of Edna Umeh who was killed by a speeding car on Nov. 30 while serving as a crossing guard at Lindley Middle School on Veterans Memorial Highway in Cobb. She was “Everyone’s Grandmother” who “cared deeply for the children she crossed safely to the other side of the road,” according to the resolution written by Cobb Commissioner Lisa Cupid.
