Duluth officials reviewed an alternative plan Aug. 24 for Main Street Phase II parking. The city originally proposed creating additional parking in the Norfolk Southern Railroad right-of-way along Main Street on the southeast side of the road. The railroad, however, declined the city’s request to construct this parking.
A new proposal includes 36 angled parking spaces along the northwest side of Main Street near the Monarch School. The school board and Norfolk Southern have approved the revised design although coordination still will be required for drainage and right-of-entry on the railroad’s property. The construction is partially within the Main Street/railroad right-of-way, and partially on school property.
The original Phase II construction cost was $936,000. The estimated cost for the new configuration is $837,000 with a savings of $99,000 to be held in contingency until project completion. If approved, plans will take approximately four months to develop.
