Decatur mayor: School system in ‘crisis’

City Schools Decatur gave city commissioners an overview of its building needs last week, with the school system debating whether it will ask for an $82 million, $75 million or $60 million General Obligation Bond referendum on the November ballot.

CSD is planning on more than doubling classroom space at Decatur High and Renfroe Middle schools, and will also need a new K-5 school in the next several years. Superintendent Phyllis Edwards told commissioners that without the bond, alternatives would include more portables, a year-round calendar or split shifts.

“They did an excellent job to catch us up,” Mayor Jim Baskett said after the presentation. “I’m not going to second-guess their numbers. They have a tough problem, it’s a crisis, and it affects everybody in the city.”
