Decatur Mayor Pro Tem Kecia Cunningham, the city’s second longest-serving commissioner, was arrested last week on charges of failure to maintain her lane and driving under the influence, according to police records. She was initially spotted by an officer making a too-wide turn off Sam’s Crossing east onto College Avenue, eventually getting stopped on College about one mile later at 12:18 a.m. June 11. Cunningham was briefly jailed at the DeKalb County Jail.

“I am deeply embarrassed by this,” Cunningham told the AJC on Wednesday. “The policeman was doing his job and I appreciate that. I accept responsibility for this, and the consequences, and I apologize for my actions.”

Cunningham, 49, has lived in Decatur since 1994 and was first elected to the City Commission in November, 1999, representing District 2, a portion of the city’s southern area. Only Mayor Jim Baskett, elected in 1995, has served longer on the five-person commission.

Cunningham, who did attend Monday’s regular commission meeting, is up for re-election this year.
