Decatur saw its annexation master plan fall apart in the legislature Wednesday, and on Thursday its homestead exemption bill was defeated in the House. The city was seeking legislation to increase homestead exemption for city taxes, particularly for those over 65 with low and moderate incomes.

“Adoption of the proposed legislation would have [provided seniors] over $1,100 of annual tax savings,” City Manager Peggy Merriss said in a statement Thursday afternoon. She added the city commission will try again next year to “secure reconsideration of the legislation by the General Assembly.”
