Decatur was recently designated a national “Silver Walk Friendly Community,” for its pedestrian-oriented programs like Team Decatur, Walk With a Doc, Bright at Night Walks, Sunday Strolls and the year-long “Safe Routes to School Program” which serves as a state model.

The award was presented by The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center committee, which is sponsored in part by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The committee also cited the city’s Unified Development Ordinance and Downtown Decatur Streetscape Design Guidelines, ensuring that future development includes pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly travel.

To date, 57 communities in the U.S. have been designated as Walk Friendly Communities.
