Two departing Cumming city officials were honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgia Municipal Association at the council’s December meeting.
The award goes to elected officials who have served more than 35 years. Cumming Mayor H. Ford Gravitt has served as mayor since 1971, and for four years before that on the city council for a total 51 years of service. City Councilman Quincy Holton has held down a city council post for 49 years, beginning Jan. 1, 1969.
GMA official Bill Thornton told council members that it’s believed Gravitt is the longest-serving mayor and Holton the council member with the longest tenure of any GMA-member city. He praised both for leaving a “wonderful legacy” to both the community and the state.
Both men were defeated in their bids for re-election Nov. 7. Their terms end Dec. 31.
