Two contested races for Cherokee County Board of Commissioners will be on the ballot for the May 24 primary following last week’s qualifying. In District 3, Canton residents Bob Kovacs and Presley White will be joined by Benny Carter of White and Jack Staver. All are Republicans. Incumbent Brian Poole failed to qualify last week.
In District 2, incumbent Ray Gunnin did qualify and will be opposed by Jim Hubbard. Both are Republicans from Woodstock.
A race also developed for Cherokee County Board of Education Chair, as Susan Tlacil will take on fellow Republican Kyla Cromer of Canton.
Four Republicans will do battle in the race for Cherokee County Sheriff. Chip McCarthy of Woodstock, Frank Reynolds and Jeff Donley of Canton plus David Waters of Ball Ground will vie to replace retiring Sheriff Roger Garrison.
Derek Poarch of Woodstock will challenge incumbent Patricia “Patty” Baker for Clerk of the Superior Court in a GOP contest.
