Marietta to consider CID on Franklin Road
The Marietta City Council has agreed to move a proposal for a community improvement district on Franklin Road to a full council vote May 14. The district would allow business property owners to tax themselves using revenues to promote infrastructure improvements. Cobb has two improvement districts in the Cumberland and Town Center areas. City promotes tourism at trail on Wednesday
Powder Springs and Cobb Travel and Tourism officials will give away bottled water and promotional items from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Florence Road Trailhead of the Silver Comet Trail in conjunction with National Travel and Tourism Week.
City officials also will be promoting the Southern Quilt Trail, Seven Springs Museum, the nationally known Cobb County BMX park, McEachern High School sports and arts complex, parks and integrated city bike and pedestrian trails.

Construction to start on health care center
Gov. Nathan Deal and Cobb Commission Chair Tim Lee are scheduled to speak at a groundbreaking event 11 a.m. today for a mental health care facility at 1775 County Services Parkway, Marietta.
The center, expected to open in spring 2015, is part of a Cobb County Community Service Board expansion of community based behavioral healthcare services.
The agency provides help to Cobb and Douglas County residents with mental health and developmental disabilities.

Plans in the works for new Norcross park
In keeping with strategies outlined in its Master Parks Plan, Norcross recently acquired property in the Pinnacle Point business park off Brookhollow Parkway. Cherokee schools moving on Marlow replacement
The Cherokee County Board of Education will pick an interim replacement for former board member Kelly Marlow at its Jun 19 meeting. The replacement will serve until Jan 1, 2015, when the winner of a planned Nov. 4 special election will take office. Board members directed attorney Tom Roach to prepare an application packet/process for its May 15 meeting, after which the position will be publicly advertised. Saturday fire destroys Cherokee home
A weekend blaze destroyed a residence in the Free Home area of Cherokee County. Fire and Emergency Services crews arrived at 235 Silver Burch Court at 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Forsyth plans highway safety campaign
More people are dying on Forsyth County roads, prompting the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to stage a “Making a Safer Forsyth” tour Wednesday through Saturday. Officials point to 22 roadway fatalities in 2012, a 144 percent increase from three years earlier. The campaign will include teams visiting Forsyth county schools to talk about passenger safety and impaired/distracted driving, senior center visits to assist older drivers and a free car safety seat check. Johns Creek officials reschedule cleanup
Because of inclement weather, Johns Creek officials have rescheduled the city’s annual Creek Crawl for 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Reynolds Stock Farm, located on Abbotts Bridge Road at the creek. Volunteers from the city, Keep Johns Creek Beautiful personnel and Chattahoochee High School students, among others, will pick up trash along a half-mile stretch of the waterway. Students given books for summer reading
Each student at Dunbar Elementary in Atlanta’s Mechanicsville neighborhood picked 12 books each last week that they took home for summer reading.
The books were distributed through Athens-based Books for Keeps in partnership with Atlanta Public Schools and the Annie E. Casey Foundation Civic Site in Atlanta.

Judges dismisses Doraville strip club case
DeKalb County Superior Court Judge has dismissed a strip club’s lawsuit against Doraville that sought to allow it to continue to offer nude dancing and alcohol.
The Oasis club was annexed into Doraville in December 2012 but had previously operated as an adult entertainment venue under an agreement with DeKalb County. Doraville’s local laws do not allow nudity and alcohol in sexually-oriented businesses. APRIL HUNT
Trinity Triangle close to construction
Construction on the Trinity Triangle development, in the wedge between Decatur’s East Trinity Place and East Howard Avenue, should begin this month. The three-acre site, former location for the Relax Inn, will include 214 apartment units – 53 studio apartments, 120 one-bedrooms and 41 two bedrooms – garage parking and 12,000 square feet of ground-floor retail. Fayette sets 2014-15 school hours
The Fayette County Board of Education has tweaked the daily schedule for the 2014-15 school year. Elementary school hours will remain 7:40 a.m.-2:25 p.m. Middle school will start and end five minutes earlier, 8:10 a.m.-3:10 p.m. High school will begin 10 minutes earlier but end at the same time, going from 8:35 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Hours for the alternative education, Mainstay and Open Campus programs will not change.

May is Foster Care Month in Fayette
The Fayette County Board of Commissioners has designated May as Foster Care Month. The proclamation notes that more than 14,000 Georgia children need such care, and more families in Fayette are needed to open their homes to displaced kids. Henry Middle to open 1989 time capsule

Clayton State University’s Dental Hygiene Clinic is looking for children patients. “To meet their graduation requirements, senior dental hygiene students are required to provide oral care for a certain number of children,” said Dr. Gail Barnes, chair of the Department of Dental Hygiene which runs the clinic.
