APS student chosen for advisory council

Jamesia Robinson of Grady High in Atlanta was one of 50 students selected to serve on state Superintendent John Barge’s 2012-2013 student advisory council.

Members of the council will meet twice during the school year to advise Barge on how state policies are affecting the classroom.

Georgia Tech hosts stadium discussion

The Student Planning Association of the Georgia Institute of Technology’s School of City and Regional Planning will host an event to celebrate World Town Planning Day from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Reinsch-Pierce Family Auditorium.

The discussion, “Win or Waste? Atlanta at Odds Over Stadium Proposal,” will highlight the current proposal to construct a new stadium for the Atlanta Falcons.

Rep. Mike Dudgeon, R-District 24; Rep. Rashad Taylor, D-District 55; and Benjamin Flowers, a professor at Georgia Tech are scheduled to speak.

“Jobs Bus” back in DeKalb

DeKalb County’s “jobs bus” – an RV outfitted with computers, private interview area and office gear for job seekers – will be stationed 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Clarkston Library, 951 N. Indian Creek Dr. and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, it will be at St. Vincent DePaul Society, 4871 Memorial Dr.

The county’s launched the mobile career center earlier this year to support efforts to put residents back to work by bringing together job seekers and businesses for recruiting, screening and training.

MARTA announces fare increase

Customers who qualify for a reduced fare – riders 65 and older and riders with disabilities – will pay $1 per MARTA trip beginning Nov. 11.

The price for MARTA Mobility customers will increase, too. MARTA Mobility is the service that provides customized transportation to disabled riders. The rate for a one way trip will go to $4 from $3.80.

College Park is seeking coaches for the 2013 baseball season. Qualifications: Must be able to work with children, ages 3 to 14, to teach them the game of baseball. Cobb residents will have access to a “one-stop” recycling center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 10, at Jim Miller Park.

Keep Cobb Beautiful arranged the event to celebrate America Recycles Day. Multiple materials will be collected including electronics, paper, textiles, latex paint and appliances.
