A Gwinnett County prison inmate on work release brought a “cloned” stolen car back to the prison, police say.

Deangelo Bell, 26, of Lilburn, is wanted on charges of theft by receiving stolen property, altered serial numbers and probation violation, according to the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Bell returned from work release on Feb. 20 and parked a 2018 Dodge Challenger at the Gwinnett County Department of Corrections, a county-run prison, police said. Detectives with the motor vehicle theft unit were searching for stolen vehicles that day and saw the Challenger.

The detectives found the Challenger had an altered VIN and an Alabama car dealer license plate. When detectives found the real VIN, they discovered the car had been purchased using fraudulent information at a Conyers car dealership.

Detectives believe Bell saw them inspecting the car and fled before they could detain him. Police do not know Bell’s current whereabouts; he did not report back to the prison.

Anyone with information about Bell’s whereabouts is asked to contact Gwinnett County detectives at 770-513-5300 or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477. Crime Stoppers tips may be rewarded with up to $2,000 if they lead to an arrest or indictment.
