Ground has been broken for a new Cherokee County Fire Station 9 on Reinhardt College Parkway in north Canton.
The Cherokee Fire & Emergency Services facility is being constructed on a 10.5-acre site across the street from the present fire house. The new station will have three bays large enough for a ladder truck, as well as a kitchen, dining room, day room and accommodations for up to 12 firefighters, officials said.
“We’ve been working for years to find property to build a new station, and it was long overdue,” Fire Chief Tim Prather said at a recent groundbreaking ceremony attended by county and city of Canton officials.
This spring, the Cherokee Board of Commissioners awarded a $3.67 million construction contract for the station to BM&K Construction Inc. With a $150,000 contingency and $100,000 for furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E), the county’s total capital commitment for the facility is $3.92 million.
The new station is scheduled to open next spring. Information: https://bit.ly/2KHesvL
